Monitoring the composition of the intestinal microbiome in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: application in clinical practice

Abstract

In this study, the composition of the intestinal microbiome in patients with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation was studied in real clinical practice. The published stage of the study included 12 adult patients who underwent allogeneic HSCT. The methods of graphical and mathematical analysis revealed patterns of changes in the composition of the intestinal microbiome in HSCT, which is associated with extensive antibacterial therapy and chemotherapy during hospitalization. The decrease in the alpha biodiversity of the intestinal microbiome, independent of other clinical and laboratory parameters, was confirmed in a multivariate mathematical model. The data obtained make it possible to implement microbiome composition monitoring as a mechanism for stratification of patients during HSCT in relation to the risks of infectious complications and other adverse outcomes of transplantation.
