Estimation of mortality from viral hepatitis B and C in 2019 in four regions of the Russian Federation according to primary medical documentation

Abstract

Reducing the mortality rate is a key indicator of the effectiveness of the national program in accordance with the WHO global strategy for the elimination of viral hepatitis. The study assessed mortality from viral hepatitis B and C in 2019 in four regions of the Russian Federation according to primary medical documentation. The effectiveness of the methodology based on the analysis of primary medical documentation for assessing mortality from viral hepatitis and identifying differences in this indicator in subjects of the Russian Federation is demonstrated. The average mortality rate from acute viral hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma associated with HBV and HCV infection was 0.9 and 8.8 in Moscow, 0.5 and 1.5 in the Kaliningrad region, 8.5 and 6.4 in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), and 1.2 and 10.6 in the Republic of Tatarstan per 100 000 population, respectively. The methodology used in the study makes it possible to estimate mortality from viral hepatitis in long-term dynamics and changes in this indicator depending on the coverage of antiviral therapy in patients in the regions of the Russian Federation, and is also a valuable tool in evaluating the effectiveness of programs for the prevention and treatment of viral hepatitis.
