Relations between intensity of shedding of Blastocystis spp. and manifestations of ogastrointestinal tract dysfunction

Abstract

Widespread concept of clinical significance of Blastocystis was evaluated taking into account the prestablished criterion the – threshold number of parasite cells in the patient's samples. With the aim of monitoring the excretion of Blastocystis during 5 days, 105 fresh stool sample from 2 patient groups (n=21) were placed info a container with gastrointestinal disorders (total of 45 samples), and the second group consisted of 12 patients with allergic symptoms (total of 60 samples). The establishment of irregularities and sharp fluctuations of Blastocystis spp. excretion indicate that quantitative evaluation at the moment of actual examination does not bear stable significant value, and in the absence of morphological characteristics of parasite cannot be used as an objective criterion of current infection.
