Zika virus infection

Abstract

Zika virus was first isolated in Uganda in 1947. The agent belongs to genus Flavivirus, family Flaviviridae. Zika virus is closely related to other flaviviruses of public health relevance including dengue, yellow fever and West Nile viruses.
Zika virus is an arthropod borne virus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes.
Enzootic cycle of Zika virus is combine of natural cycle (non-human primates as reservoirs, Aedes mosquitoes as vectors) and urban cycle (human as the reservoir, urban mosquitoes as vectors.
Zika virus is transmitted by the bite of infected female mosquitoes. The possibilities of vertical, perinatal, sexual and blood transfusion transmission are viewed.
The diagnosis of disease, caused by Zika virus, is primarily based on detection of viral RNA by RT-PCR. There are no specific treatments and vaccines against the disease, caused by Zika virus. The small interfering RNAs may be viewed as efficient antiviral agent for Zika virus mediated infection at viral genome level.
The potential threat of disease, caused by Zika virus for public health, is discussed in this review. The epidemiologist characteristics, clinical features, diagnostics, prophylactic and treatment of Zika virus infection. The questions of interrelation of Zika virus with its vectors and reservoirs are viewed.
