Chlamydia infection involving the respiratory tract

Abstract

Chlamydiosis (or Сhlamydia infection) is a group of etiologically related infectious anthroponotic or zoonotic diseases, caused by pathogenic obligate intracellular bacteria of the genus Chlamydia and Chlamydophila. All nosological forms of this group (urogenital Chlamydia infection, psittacosis, pneumochlamidiosis) are characterized by widespread distribution, high contagiousness, primary involving of the columnar epithelium of the mucous membranes of the eyes, respiratory or genitourinary tracts, polymorphism of clinical symptoms, various complications and outcomes. This review is concerned with Chlamydia infection involving the respiratory system. Epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, complications and outcomes of this common infectious disease are presented.
