Pathology of the gastrointestinal tract in infection caused by Epstein-Barr virus

Abstract

The problems of gastrointestinal tract pathology in infection caused by Epstein-Barr virus are considered. The review of domestic and foreign scientific publications in free access is presented. It is shown that inflammatory lesions of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum mucosa are characteristic of the infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. The acute nature of inflammation, apparently, is associated with direct viral lesions of mucosal cells in the primary acute infection, while in the chronic course, especially in the reactivation phase, there are chronic gastritis and duodenitis, including autoimmune nature.

The role of Epstein-Barr virus in the development of stomach cancer is likely, but not fully understood. It is possible the combined participation of several pathogens in the development of inflammatory and oncological processes in the upper gastrointestinal tract.
